about
In 2006 Kat and I started a business which involved multiple trips to Phoenix to buy books to sell online; we became very familiar with the route between Phoenix and Kingman.
The lyric was written in 2008. It was based on wordplay (the mashup of a city and a mythical bird) more than any romantic angst.
As I recall Gilbert wrote and recorded the music sometime in the fall of 2008.
lyrics
The Wings Of Phoenix
‘Tween Phoenix streets and Wickenburg
the goin’ can be slow
especially near the airport
where jets are flying low.
'Tween Wickenburg and Wikieup
there's not too much to see
but I knew the Wings of Phoenix
were flying over me.
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
I watched a red sunset
just fade to grey
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Kingman lights were comin' out
as I rolled down the hill
wonderin’ what I could have done
to have her with me still
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
the life I'd dreamed about
just turned to grey
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
Phoenix wings took all my dreams
and snuffed out every spark
carried her away from me
and left me in the dark
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
through a red sunset
that slowly turned to grey
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
The Wings of Phoenix
carried her away
